A seed is the first stage of a plant's life cycle. A seed is a live plant protected in a hard coat. But it will not continue its life cycle until it gets just the right conditions. Then it will begin to sprout.
Most seeds sprout when the soil around them is damp and warm enough – for example in spring. Then the coating softens and the seed germinates, sprouting first a root and then a shoot with leaves.
