Friction depends on the bumps and pits in the touching surfaces. One way to reduce friction is to make the surfaces hard and smooth.
Another way is to fill up the surface pits using a clinging liquid called a lubricant. The particles in the liquid also slide over one another easily, so reducing friction.
Oil is a common lubricant for metals, but soap and many other materials are used in some situations.
