One of the easiest ways of showing which class you belonged to was how you dressed.

Good quality clothes cost money, and could only be afforded by the middle and upper classes.

To dress fashionably you needed more money still – so you had to be upper middle class.

Many people in the upper classes did not see the need to be fashionable – they were above that sort of thing.
