Q1: What was class?

[Answer]

People in Victorian times were very concerned about their class – that is, their position in society.

There were three classes: upper class (the aristocracy); middle class (professional people or factory owners); and lower class (people who worked with their hands).

Mixing with people – let alone marrying someone – from a lower class was frowned upon.
