During Victorian times, many middle class people were working shorter hours and had more money to spend on their children.
At home, the younger children of a wealthy family might have a nursery – a room where they could play and learn (with a governess).
Working class children had no bought toys – they had to find things to play with, but many had no time for play because they were out at work all day.
