Here are some rules that the middle classes obeyed in Victorian times. How many of these rules do we follow today?
1. Never point or stare at someone.
2. Never ask about the private matters of others.
3. Speak in a calm manner using respectful language.
4. Do not always start a conversation with the weather.
5. Do not brag about your birth or your acquaintances with distinguished or wealthy people.
6. Do not speak of religion or politics or gossip.
7. Children should be seen and not heard.
8. The hostess must sit opposite her husband in a dinner party.
