packing city, based on its position as a hub in the railroad system, and so its ability to get cattle from the Great Plains ranches to market. Its stockyards were famous across the nation. There was a popular vote, which Oklahoma City won.
Land for the Oklahoma State Capitol was allocated at N.E. 23rd Street and Lincoln Boulevard. The capitol was ‘competed’ in 1919 without a dome because there were insufficient funds. It took until 2002 for the dome to be added, and thus the building completed.
