Oklahoma City is both the capital and largest city of Oklahoma. Oklahoma City lies along one of the primary route corridors into Texas and Mexico, a route that has been used for centuries.
It is within the Great Plains region, and has one of the largest livestock markets in the world. Oil, natural gas, petroleum products are the largest sector of the local economy. The city is situated in the middle of an active oil field and oil derricks dot the capitol grounds.
The city was founded during the Land Run of 1889, and grew to a population of over 10,000 within hours of its founding.
Oklahoma City has a unique foundation. It was first settled on April 22, 1889, when the Indian Territory that had not been given to Native Americans (and called
the Unassigned Lands) was opened up for settlement by the U.S. Government. This happened on a specific day and was known as “The Land Run”.About 10,000 homesteaders settled the area now known as Oklahoma City. The population then doubled between 1890 and 1900.
The Territorial capital was Guthrie at the time that Oklahoma became a state of the Union in 1907. However, Oklahoma City, with a population of 64,000, was by far the biggest place in the state and they petitioned to become the capital. It was at this time, a major meat
