is abducted by the demon Ravana. Woven into the story are teachings of ancient Hindu wise men and gurus.
Rama is the heir to the kingdom of Ayodhya. But his stepmother conspires to stop him getting to the throne and instead he is exiled to the forest. His wife, Sita, and his brother, Lakshmana, follow him.
While in the forest, Sita is carried off by Ravana, the demon king of Lanka. In their search for Sita, the brothers battle evil with the help of the monkey general, Hanuman, and his monkey army. Eventually, Ravana
is slain by Rama and Sita is rescued, the couple are reunited and Rama rules in peace.
In the Ramayana are teachings on the proper way for kings to behave to their subjects; on how husbands and wives should treat each other; and on how to be faithful
to our families and those we love. The
story emphasises that proper behaviour by everyone in society will lead to peace and harmony for all.
The holiday of diwali celebrates Rama’s triumphant return to his kingdom (see picture on page 22).
H This picture shows a scene from the Ramayana called ‘the giving of the ring’. Seated on a rocky outcrop are Rama and Lakshmana, with the monkey army below them and springing away to the sides. Rama gives Hanuman his ring as a token by which Sita can recognise him.
