Land
Lagoon
Sea
Some people believe in living right on the beach (picture 4). To do this, their homes have to be built on stilts. Twice a day, as the tide comes in, the houses are literally in the sea. This kind of beach-side living is definitely risky.
Sand spit or island
G 3 Low islands are favourite places
for holiday houses. The more expensive homes look towards the sea, while the less expensive homes look inland across the lagoon. In this case, the more expensive homes are in the greatest danger.
You can find barrier islands and holiday homes along the entire ‘hurricane coast’ of east and south USA.
Dangers by the beach
E 4 This is what living right at the beach can mean: threatened by storm waves in
front and cliff collapse behind! This is Santa Monica, California.
