FG 2 Thick, soft rocks cannot stand up at steep angles. So when the sea cuts away at the bottom of a soft-rock cliff, it will begin to collapse. Collapse usually happens after heavy rain, when the rock has soaked up water. The water makes it easier for the rock to slide.
Here you can see what happened to part of the Holbeck Hotel, Scarborough, North Yorkshire in June 1993. The soft rock beneath it simply slipped onto the beach.
Notice that the cliff is very scarred, showing that parts of the cliff slide quite frequently.
E 3 This cliff in Christchurch, Hampshire, is eroding rapidly. In this photograph, you can see whole slabs of the cliff have recently slipped.
