If you tie a brick to a forcemeter and then lower the brick into water, something extraordinary happens – the forcemeter reading goes down!

This means that a force must be acting upwards against the weight of the brick.

We call this force buoyancy. This is the force that lets you float in a swimming bath and that stops ships sinking.
