Q1: How crowded was a Viking town?

[Answer]

There were very few Viking towns. When they did occur, they were not much bigger than villages. It was hard to have towns in Viking times because farmers produced very little spare food to sell to towns.

In towns most people earned their living as traders and craftsmen, rather than farmers. Their houses were smaller than longhouses and they were all built close together along narrow alleyways.
