Town houses were smaller than country longhouses, although they were still single rooms in which people ate, worked and slept.
Right in the centre of the room was an open hearth made of a ring of stones. This was where people cooked their food, and at night in winter people also slept around the embers.
There was little furniture and it was of the simplest kind. Tables were planks on trestles and seats were mainly simple stools.
