Through Victorian times the number of people in Britain almost doubled. But most of the extra people were in the cities.
As you can imagine, cities became bigger and more crowded, so it was important to find ways of getting lots of people about.
To begin with roads were poor, but when roads were improved, horse drawn coaches (buses) were popular. Then there was the suburban train and finally the underground railway and the tram.
