There were two ways you could notice that some people were better off. You could look at their houses and you could look at what they owned.

One huge result of some people getting wealthier was that more people owned what came to be called 'joined-up furniture', and from which we get the word joinery. It was harder to make and so cost more. So you had to be better off to afford it.

(By the way, this better-off furniture makes most of the oldest antiques of today.)
