 
	
	
As the population grew and more people left their villages and looked for work in the town, our town became more and more crowded.
	
Most families rented a room in a  slum  house behind the main street and facing a side alley.
	
Their room had no water and no toilet. It may not even have had a grate for a fire. It was cold, damp and dirty - a recipe for disease and early death.
