Q1: Why were so many men needed?

[Answer]

Probably the most famous carrack ever built was the Golden Hind. It was the ship that Sir Francis Drake used to go around the world.

It was a combination of cargo ship and man o'war (meaning it still had the cargo space of a carrack, but it also had some guns so that it could defend itself, or even attack other ships).

It had 18 guns along its 21m (63ft) length. In all, 60 crew crammed in to this small ship as well as 20 officers.
