Q1: Why did the Anglo-Saxons build watchtowers?

[Answer]

The early Anglo-Saxons mostly built in wood and very little of it has survived. This is why you find so few buildings from Anglo-Saxon times.

But they did use stone to make tall watchtowers, for no-one knew when an enemy might approach and a strong, defendable tower was important. They were effectively mini-castles, with entrances well above ground level.
