Q1: Why were some churches built as towers?

[Answer]

When we look at Anglo–Saxon buildings we mainly see churches. But actually what we often see are watchtowers with churches built alongside.

We think that the tower is part of the church, but in fact the church came after and was built alongside the tower.

Churches were places of wealth, and so protection from attackers could be vital – especially during Viking raids.
