The forum was the place where all of the 'offices' of the Roman town were located. There was the place for collecting taxes and the law courts (in a building called a basilica) and also a range of the most important temples.
All of these buildings were laid out around a large open paved square.
Around the edge were some shops shaded by a colonnade. This was the stoa.
