Q1: Why did the temples have so many columns?
[Answer]

The temple was a rectangle. The base was made of several steps. It was called a plinth.

The rows of pillars were placed on this plinth. Many pillars were needed to hold up the nearly flat slabs of the roof.

Inside the temple was a room (the cella) where there was a colossal statue of the god or goddess.
