The earliest people like 'Upright Man' ate fruit and nuts and hunted. They also chipped away at flints to make sharp-edged stone axes which they used to cut up their prey.
As it happened, these ancient people arrived in Britain at a time called the Ice Age. Each time the ice spread south it forced people to abandon Britain. About 100,000 years ago another group of such people called 'Neaderthal Man' arrived. However, although these people were human, they were not our direct ancestors.
