The first people on Earth probably lived in East Africa about 4 million years ago. These people, and their descendants, gradually wandered away from their homeland and some finally settled in Europe about two million years ago.

They were in no hurry to move as there was plenty to eat wherever they went. So it was only about 700,000 years ago that they reached Britain.
