Bombs are metal tubes packed with
explosives.
There are two kinds of bomb, fire bombs and blast bombs. The most common kind was the blast bomb. The explosive breaks up the metal case and pieces of metal – called shrapnel – are thrown in every direction. The explosive also sends out shock waves that destroy buildings. The bombs were dropped from planes in groups, known as 'sticks'. The bombs fell in a line and the result was a trail of damage from each plane.
