Hippies

Screen 5/9

Q: How did the name 'teenager' come about?

By the late 1960s, fashion had changed again. Some people started to fear the threat of nuclear war and (in America, the Vietnam war). They felt that peace could be brought about by people loving each other. They began to 'drop out' of normal living, wore loose, multicoloured clothes and often lived rough. They were the hippies.

You can pick out the change in mood by listening to the Beatles music. Listen to She Loves You (1963) and Yellow Submarine (1968). The change is dramatic.
