Although much was changing, some things were not. Most women did not go to a paid job, but stayed at home. One reason for this was that there were fewer aids to housework then. Washing clothes still meant scrubbing them by hand, for example. So housework took up much more time than it does now.
Families did not have fridges, so fresh food had to be collected daily, and this also took time. But, just as importantly, men still thought it was their job to bring in the money…
