As the 1920s and 30s went on, so things in Britain began to change. Motor cars became more common, aeroplanes carried more passengers and electrical goods such as radios, irons and fires appeared.
But Britain became divided by this change. The old industries that used coal were in the North and they began to lose jobs, while all the new industries, that gave new jobs, were in the Midlands and South. So the South got richer and the North got poorer.
