Q1: Why do people live mainly on one side of a valley and not the other?

Mountains have different weather to other places. In part this is because they are so high and, as you go higher the air gets colder.

But mountains also have deep valleys and the weather in these valleys depends on how much sunshine they get.

In fact, you will find that the places where people live are very much influenced by the weather at the bottom and on the sides of the valleys.
