The most modern houses were built beyond the inner city. They make up the biggest area of houses in the city.
This area is called the suburbs. It was built (and is still being built) at a time when buses and cars are common.
Houses and gardens are bigger. Many people cannot live close to a railway station or bus stop and so have to travel by car.
