Cities and towns are made of huge numbers of buildings, but every city has:
• a center which is a mixture of tall modern office buildings, entertainments, shops and preserved old buildings
• a ring of old buildings around the center. These are a mixture of small houses and of factories and warehouses. It is called the inner city.
• finally, there is a wide ring of modern houses and shopping centers between the inner city and the countryside. These are the suburbs.
