To measure water speed accurately, mark out a 10 metre length of stream bank using your tape measure and then find out how many seconds it takes for your floating leaf etc (see the movie) to float 10 metres.
The water speed in metres per second is: 10 divided by the number of seconds it took for the float to travel 10 metres.
