Lots of sand and mud are brought to the sea by rivers. They are carried along by fast-flowing rivers, but when the river water reaches the sea it stops, and so the material it is carrying settles out.
When this material builds up to be thick enough, it breaks the surface and is called a delta.
There are two kinds of delta, a bird's-foot delta and a fan delta.
