Beaches can be made of very different sizes of material. Fine sand is usually found in sheltered bays, with shingle in more exposed places.

Sand is moved up and down a beach by swash, but also sideways as longshore drift.

When sand and mud are brought to the sea by rivers, the materials settle out and build up until they break the sea surface as a delta.
