The greatest periods of expansion in Dover occurred in the years following World War I and World War II. New no-farm based companies began to arrive as a result of improved connections to markets produced by the building of the the Dupont Highway through Delaware in 1924.
Modern Dover is one of the fast-growing areas in Delaware. It is also home to Dover Air Force Base. Kraft Foods and Procter & Gamble have manufacturing facilities in Dover. After World War I, the City of Dover acquired lands
for the construction of an airport. This land was developed during World War II as the Dover Air Force Base. It has developed into one of the largest military freight terminals in the world, and is home to the 436th and 512th Airlift Wings.
