Tallahassee is the 126th largest city in the United States. Tallahassee became the capital of Florida in 1824.
Tallahassee is the main city in the northern Big Bend region.
Hernando de Soto and his expedition occupied the Native American Apalachee town of Anhaica (now Tallahassee) in the winter of 1538–1539. This is believed to be the first place Christmas was celebrated in the continental United States.
Tallahassee began as a colonial settlement
in the 17th century as one of several Spanish missions founded in the territory of the Apalachee to provide food and labor for the main Spanish coastal settlement at St. Augustine. The name “Tallahassee” is a Muskogean Indian word meaning “old fields”.
Tallahassee became the capital of Florida because it was roughly half way between St. Augustine and Pensacola, the capitals of the Spanish colonies of East Florida and West Florida.
The capitol was originally a log building. In 1845 the capitol was rebuilt in Greek revival style. It is now known as the “old Capitol”, and behind
it rises the replacement Capitol building that was constructed in the 1970s. It is the third-tallest state
