Austin is the capital of the US state of Texas, the 11th-most populous city, and the second largest state capital in the United States, after Phoenix, Arizona. It is one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S.
The area had been home to Native Americans for thousands of years before Europeans arrived. In this dry part of the country, it was mostly used by hunters and gatherers who moved through seasonally. When Europeans arrived, the Native American peoples using the site were Tonkawa, Comanches and Apaches.
Spanish missionaries arrived from East Texas in July 1730, but no major settlement followed. So it was not until 1837 that the first permanent settlement was established by Anglo-American settlers. They founded the village of Waterloo where the Shoal Creek joined the Colorado
River. Being close to a river was vital in this arid landscape.
