new capital was still poor. As a result, in the days before canals and then railways, Columbia grew little. Columbia’s population reached
just 1,000 by 1800. However, in 1800 one of the first canals in the United States was dug
to connect Columbia with the Cooper River,
which in turn flowed to the sea at the port city of Charleston. This made all the difference, and Columbia started to grow in importance. The energy of falling water along the Fall Line was used to power Columbia’s early mills.
