Columbia is the capital of and largest city in the largely rural state of South Carolina. The city is almost at the geographic center of South Carolina, where the Saluda River and the Broad River combine to form the Congaree River.
For thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans, the area that was to become Columbia, was home to Native Americans. When Europeans under Spaniard Hernando de Soto arrived in May 1540, the Native Americans were the Congaree people.

Hale-Elmore-Seibels House, a Georgian style mansion of 1796. It is the oldest house in Columbia.
