Santa Fe (meaning “holy faith” in Spanish) is the fourth-largest city in the state. Santa Fe was founded in 1610, which makes it the oldest capital city in the United States, and the oldest city in New Mexico. Its name when founded was “La Villa Real de la Santa Fe de San Francisco de Asís” (The Royal Town of the Holy Faith of St. Francis of Assisi” )

For thousands of years the place that was to become Santa
Fe was home to ancient Native Americans including peoples known as Anasazi, and whose descendents we now call the Pueblo people. They are all village dwellers who developed unique multi-story blocks of apartments made from mud-brick or adobe.
One group of people developed a settlement from about 900AD. This was built around a central plaza just as the modern city it. In this semi-arid area it is vital to have a dependable water source and that was provided by the Santa Fe River. In these earlier it flowed throughout the year.
