Trenton was a significant place in
the Revolutionary War, and the famous December 26, 1776 crossing of the Delaware by George Washington was just upriver. Nearby was the site of the Battle of Trenton. The British mercenary (Hessian) troops were stationed in the barracks at Trenton.
After the war, Trenton was the national capital of the United States in November and December 1784.
Trenton is located near the exact geographic center of the state. Primarily for this reason, Trenton was named as New Jersey’s capital in 1790,
During the 1800s and early 1900s, Trenton was a major manufacturing center in the country. The city produced steel, rubber, wire, rope, linoleum, and ceramics. It was at this time that Trenton adopted the slogan “Trenton Makes, The World Takes”, which is displayed on the Lower Free Bridge.
Many of the factories had a workforce of new immigrants, and it is from this time that the large Italian, Hungarian, and Jewish communities arrived. North Trenton still has a large Polish-American neighborhood.
With the decline in manufacturing in many of the east coast cities during the 20th century, there finding alternative businesses to come to these manufacturing age cities has been challenging. The state government is currently the largest employer.
