 Meadows
  A river that has been straightened and cleaned out.
Ducks can feed on the green microbes called algae that grow in the water, but they have no protected place to nest.
                                  Tadpoles and fish can be found, but only in small numbers. The variety of fish will be small.
                                   There are few dead leaves on the bottom for insects and other creatures to eat. As a result, there is not much food for fish. There is only a small supply of fish for birds such as kingfishers.
There is little variety of plants on or in the river. There is no place for a kingfisher to perch while hunting for fish.

But the shelter and variety of places for wildlife are reduced and this means that fewer plants and animals can live in such a place. You will find that many of the food chains in picture  have links missing in picture . Once one link is missing, the whole chain may collapse and other creatures die.

Changing channels
