DAILY LIFE
Daily life in ancient Greece
Ancient Greece was made up of a few wealthy people, free citizens and many slaves. Most lived in the countryside. Only the wealthy lived in the city.
Life in ancient Greece, as in all other countries of the time, was based on wealth and power. Daily life for the wealthy and citizens depended on the house chores, the farming and the mining being done by slaves.
Homes
Greece is hot and sunny in summer. In spring, autumn and winter a strong, chill wind can blow. As a result, homes (picture 1) were built around courtyards. The courtyard gave privacy, it gave shade

from the sun and it gave protection from winter rain and wind. The courtyard was also the place where the whole family could sit in the evening by the light of oil lamps (picture 2) and listen to stories called mytHs and faBles (see pages 22–23).
