  GODS, SANCTUARIES AND TEMPLES
Temples
Inside the outer columns was the central sacred space, or cella. Inside the cella was an enormous statue of the god
or goddess to whom the temple was dedicated.
Pilgrims brought gifts to the god or goddess, and when they had left these on a table in the cella, they would go out into

the temple courtyard to a large outdoor altar and worship there. On special occasions, animals were brought as sacrifices to the gods and killed at the temple.
