What makes a coast?
A coast, or seaside, is where waves and tides change the shape of the land.
People often use the word seaside when they are talking about the coast (picture ). It’s a good word because it describes exactly where the coast is – the land beside the sea.
Beach
To many people, a seaside holiday means a holiday on the beach (picture 2). Many beaches are almost flat and made of sand, or steeper and made of

This is the landward part of the coast, where the cliff tops and sand dunes are.
The softest part of the coast is where bays occur.
