Some countries, such as Bangladesh in Asia, and the Netherlands in Europe, lie entirely on deltas.
Only the world’s biggest rivers can create long-lasting deltas, because otherwise the currents and waves of the sea would wash them away.
Deltas are not very common in the UK because most rivers enter the sea
in estuaries (see page 20). Deltas will only grow from the British coast when the estuaries have been filled in.

is North America’s largest river, and you can see
it winding towards the sea in these pictures.
The delta is everything that stretches beyond the normal coastline. Look for the plume of sand and silt off the end of the delta. It is being pushed in one direction by the sea currents.
