Circular bays
Circular bays (pictures 3 and b) are very picturesque. They occur where a band of hard rock runs beside the coast. The soft rock inland is then only scooped out where waves have broken through the hard rock (picture 4). These bays are not very common.
3 A few bays are almost circular. This is Lulworth Cove in Dorset.
4 Here you can see how a band of rock can protect a bay. In the foreground the rock has only partly been worn away and behind it is a circular bay. In the background, the hard rock has been worn entirely away and so the bay is more open. This picture was taken near Durdle Dor.
