You can use these books as assisted reading for the same reason. Those still learning to read can be helped to understand what they are decoding.
And now to the pictures. The pictures are not decoration background to the text blocks. They are specifically chosen to give the opportunity for you to explore together. Let’s take the example of the Mountain Quick start book. We will dip into pages 8-9...
Look at the first read box. The information words are Alps, peaks and valleys. Make sure students can find peaks and valleys. Point to them on the photograph.
Now ask additional questions to help draw out more and more information from the picture. For example, what shape are the peaks? (pointed); do the peaks have any plants on? (no) and
where can we make sure by looking closely? (foreground); what shape are the blocks of rock in the foreground? (broken with sharp sides - frost shattered); how much snow is on the peaks? (not much) so which season was this picture taken? (summer) and on and on – and we have only just dealt with the first bullet point/cartoon read box.
See what we mean? You draw out from the picture what is appropriate for your audience, at which ever level you are working with.
