So how does this work, and how would you introduce them to parents? Parents often comment about easy-reading books having less text than expected. So begin by explaining to them that these books are not for them - they are for their children, and that they are written by expert teachers who know exactly what they are doing.
These books are a linear learning format. Students know what they are learning and one idea builds on the next. They rarely have annotations, for the reason that students lose focus when they start reading all over the page. And we absolutely want them to learn in a sequenced way.
They also have the same format, all of the time. This means students get used to how to read them in digestible chunks.
Despite what may look like a superficial format at first glance, the whole of the main points of the syllabus are covered. That is what we mean by starting points.
Each page has a picture with bullet points. Don’t recognize the bullet points? That is because they are disguised as cartoon-style read boxes.
Those boxes are crucial.
They pace out the work, giving an opportunity for the information to be read and digested one point at a time. ‘Cartoon read boxes’ are familiar and comfortable to students.
