The Russian docking compartment (called Pirs) was added in September 2001.

Meanwhile, NASA continued its flight tests of the X-38, a demonstrator for the crew return vehicle, which would be the ISS lifeboat.
In this way, by adding to the station piece by piece,
the ISS changed from being a concept on a drawing board to a reality.
Living quarters and crew
One of the big challenges facing science and technology
is how to allow for continuous occupancy in space. The Space Shuttle and Mir have already laid the foundation for this, but ISS crew rotations every 6 months will ensure that no lasting damage is done to people until science is better equipped to understand the effects on the human body of long-term space travel.
